jg told me that his colleague's dog, an akita, bit someone in the face yesterday. even though the details are unclear, the news made me incredibly sad.
waffles is a dog who forgets she's a dog. she rarely ever barks and she avoids other dogs like she just couldn't be bothered. except this one time when she nearly ate another dog. it happened on our daily walk.
we were moving along on the sidewalk when an unwatched dog approached us from a parking lot. he passed us and everything was fine until he rounded back and tried to pee on waffles' tail. waffles instantly spat out her tennis ball and jumped on the other dog. they started fighting right in front of me. he was the size of waffles but he fought very poorly. i was rather relieved when he managed to shake loose and ran off. but then, as if to prove some beastly law of the jungle, waffles ran after him, baring her teeth and growling and barking, totally out of character. i chased after her through the parking lot screaming, "no waffles! no no no! waffles no!"
the other dog ran inside an unlit warehouse and waffles actually had the wit to stop at the entrance. the entire drama occurred in less than a minute but it scared me like you wouldn't believe. when i finally caught up to waffles, she instantly transformed back to the smiley dog, tongue and all. she wagged her tail and looked up at me with that you-must-be-so-proud-of-me face, as if i should pat her on the head and give her a treat for what she just did.
i walked waffles all the way back to the office by the collar. i was totally shaken, even crying. i couldn't help thinking about what would have happened if she caught up with the other dog. the whole incident really terrified me.
i just can't imagine what it's like to know that your dog bit a person.
