inside the needlepoint joint

that's holly at the greatest yarn store ever. it's in ogden, utah. everything about this store was impressive, the yarn selections, the assortment of books, the knit and felt samples, the natural lighting, even the cabinetry. we learned from a genuinely friendly staff that the yarn harlot was coming to the slc library. too bad we had better things to do.

anyway, i'm back! i had a terrific time in salt lake city, mormons and all. i am now going through the thousands of pictures i took. i'll start recounting my trip with, gasp, some sock knitting.

sock above: fog city, slc, great salt lake, and lake tahoe

first two were taken on the flight to salt lake city. last two, on the flight from. anyway, the yarn was given to me some four years ago. i finished the first sock over three years ago. since i needed a small project to take with me on this trip, i decided to knit the second sock. i cast on while i was waiting to board at sfo. it really helped alleviate my anxiety with flying.

sock two at 70%

let's see how long it will take me to finish this pair of socks.

look what i saw while waiting to board the flight back to san francisco.

fellow sock knitter seen at slc airport gate b9

an off tangent story: see the arm in the foreground to the left of the picture above? it belongs to a tubby guy who couldn't stop talking on the phone. he called one person after another and talked for over an hour. some of them didn't want to talk. he woke up one person by accident so he apologized profusely before hanging up and calling the next person. some of them he called more than once ("hey, i'm still at the airport..."). he put his phone away once, only to go get himself a giant sandwich. he came back, swallowed his food whole, and resumed dialing. how very embarrassing.

holly and the dragon

holly wore two of her awesome hand knit aran sweaters during my visit. they possessed me to map up some cables the moment i got home.

that's one of the sleeves i charted. the major cable you see is a (downsized) pattern by barbara walker called looping wave. for the body, i'm using walker's double x cable (which i dimwittedly charted before i got the book). you can see it in this action shot taken by jg:

schmee bright an early sunday morning

i hope to cast on for this sweater in a few days. that's if the charts work.

body, hem up

that's my aran progress as of this morning. the knitting is slow work, especially after blasting through the gay pride sweater. what you see on the needles took me two and a half hours to knit. the off needle part is my first attempt, which took me over three hours. i used us9 needles for it and decided that i wasn't happy with the fabric.

some stats:

yarn: 100% wool worsted weight in an exciting sweatshirt gray
        gauge: 20 stitches = 4.5 inches, 6 rows = 1 inch

the knitting looks and feels satisfactory so far. i hope it's smooth sailing from here on.

*name given by holly after she rejected my suggestion of calling it the
holy christmas sweater.

cnsf: may edition thursday 05.15.2008

it's been forever since i last attended cnsf. this week it was hosted by kelly+domo, complete with a full on dinner, which i didn't get pictures of because i was too busy stuffing my face.

craftas: andrea, kelly, amanda, and new member frankee

cnsf now has a mascot. he's the only male attendant in cnsf history. introducing smoky the mutt.

"i guard craftas from the evil opossum."

please note that our mascot has three ears. also, cnsf now has our own gangsta sign. we take this very seriously.

must have vagina to go on this ride

one trick pony tuesday 05.20.2008

that's me after a wild tailgate ride from the spiral jetty. i had given the gay pride sweater to my sister but then i "borrowed" it back for my trip to utah. i'm in the process of returning it:

gay pride, v2

it's might as well that i'm knitting her another. she thought v1 was too short. and too tight. this from a person who is twenty pounds lighter than me. yeah, so anyway, v2 will be two inches bigger all around. also, branding v2 will be done in overstitch. no more ill skilled color knitting.

moving right along, my aran sweater progress:

ready for sleeves

notice how the cables in the side panels got erratic about a third of the way up the body. i was experimenting with moving the twists for a wider cable. they look quite jacked up. symmetrically jacked up, no less!

sleeve one, cables untampered

new to my art collection:

painted by my six year old niece

acquired last week while visiting my sister. i made a loud gasp when i saw it on my niece's desk. my sister looked at me as if to say "you need help." when i asked my niece stephanie if i may have it, she nodded. i believe i shrieked.
