knit in public, sort of monday 06.12.2006

last week i learned that saturday was knit in public day. i made effort to particpate.

that's me casting on for a sock while waiting to board the ferry to anacapa. i chose to knit a sock only because none of my current projects is portable. anyway, i'm not sure that i succeeded knitting in public; there were very few people around and everyone was too busy trying beat the boyscouts to the ferry.

what did you do saturday? did you try to knit in public?

sometimes i knit tuesday 06.13.2006

that's the sock i cast on for my knit in public attempt. i like every color in the yarn except the blue. from the look of the ball, i didn't think there would be so much of it. deceptive.

note the screw ups on the bottom rows. i don't really know what i was trying to knit anyway. i just wanted to try out the neat color pattern.

i got that magazine from in stitches before they closed shop. i bought it just for the article on the mittens.

The mittens [...] are very typical of Estonian knitting. The pattern
is the traditional Oaoiekiri or Bean Blossom pattern from the
          country of Rapha.

to me they look just like coffee beans, nice and simple. i hope to apply it to a sweater some day.

shameless vanity

that's the (flyerless) head of my brand new spinning wheel. i haven't had a chance to assemble it but i just have to show it off. i just about danced on my desk when it arrived this morning. i was going to blog at length about the "customisation" but andy at majacraft has already beat me to it.

thuy loves majacraft.

betraying the drop spindle tuesday 06.20.2006

i assembled the gem last night and studied it for hours. glynis left the test spun yarn on the bobbin so i studied it, too. setting up the wheel was intuitive and quick though the treadling took some getting used to. overall it's smooth, quiet, and nicely proportionate for a short girl. feels good. doesn't look too bad either.

sore bum* thursday 06.22.2006

there's been much debate about what to do with the gem if i never mastered it. i'd sell it but who would buy a wheel with that glaring engraving? so i got back in the saddle and treadled as if my life depended on it.

i spun that last night while watching so you think you can dance and two episodes of sex in the city. too fine, i'm afraid. erin promises me that i will be able to spin it bulkier. some day.
