13.75 months old
i took that picture when saw her briefly last friday. her momma requested for new hats because the pink one no longer fits; made me feel bad for having neglected my favorite hat wearer.
ejay shall get her hats!

i bought a very basic knitting book from kinokuniya all because of this picture.
i was sold on two things: crown shaping and flat stockinette brim. the crown i can figure out, but an unrolled stockinette cast on edge? how? also, note how big the hat is on the girl. must be a trend to wear it so loosely. as i prefer a snug fit, this style simply looks sloppy to me.
here's a portion of the pattern:
looks like it's knitted flat and then sewn up. i'm guessing because it's designed for beginners. i'm going to knit a tiny version of it for ejay. i'll try knitting the top flap like the botton of the sock heel. then i'll graft the final edges. it should look pretty seamless.
now only if i could remember: do i own any kid friendly yarn?

look at this wonderful gift mariko gave me last friday.

free little piggy inside!
at first i thought it was clever packaging for some miniature food toys. no, they are real bandaids, everyone! after i peeled the paper off i actually put it up to my nose and sniffed it. alas, it only smelled slightly of petroleum.
the box claims, "perfect for cuts, scrapes, grease-burns, or other minor boo-boos." i wonder if it's safe for vegetarians.

i got this email from my buddy m today. how can i keep from posting this?
got back from peru last night. i'm in ny [...] i'll be back in sf tomorrow
but i'm leaving for china on friday. i have something to send you
from peru (some woolly goodness), but i won't be able to
send it until i get back from china. did you get my postcard? i'll send
another from shanghai and i'll post my pics [here] when i return.
not sure how long i'll be in china yet, probably til the end of the month
or beginning of sept.
cheers | m...
never mind that he litters his email with cities and countries. the entire lot of them pales next to woolly goodness!
schmee loves m.

i was at the java station last night knitting hat one for ejay when i was asked about the yarn. all i could muster was, " four season something, 80% wool and 20% acrylic." i went home and studied the label; it's four seasons sabrina, 75% wool, 25% acrylic.

60 stitches around, us8
i divided the circumference by four but the crown shaping turned out to be an elongated rectangle. i'm going to reknit it and try for a square. i bet it would work if the knitted edge is 30% of the stitches and the decreased edge is 20%.

sock heel view
i tried for a flat stockinette brim by using one row of purl but, as you can see, it does not work. i wonder if a stockinette cast off would work better.
thanks everyone for your advice on this hat. if you've tried this pattern, please show me what you got.

these days if it weren't for knit groups, i wouldn't be knitting. i went to the java station an hour early just to wind down. around 7, most of the usual suspects showed up plus three unfamiliar faces: christy, erin, and betsy.

java station 7:50 pm
i didn't knit worth anything. i spent the evening drifting in and out listening everyone's conversations. i had forgotten how nice it is to be among knitters.

marin, chauntel, christy, tracy, erin, betsy, summers, and suzanne
i have a larger version of that panorama if you'd like to see who's who. the lighting was way too low but i rather enjoyed it. only if the music was mellower.
happy friday, y'all!

saturday i went with jg to the beach house on state street. while he lusted after long boards, i checked out the knit goods. i found two notable items.

rebels knitted boots
i didn't know what to make of them. i was attracted enough to study them but repulsed enough not to try them on. very conflicted.

brioche stitch
i was curious if they're hand knitted but i couldn't find any explanation on the boots or the box.
i'm attracted to the colors of this next item.

stussy 100% merino wool $75
i would have bought it if the stripes didn't differ from top to bottom. i love both styles, just not on the same sweater. a very fine piece of knitwear otherwise.
