up with knitters sunday 09.12.2004

schmeebot is back, y'all!   whoop whoop!

last tuesday i got the nicest present in the mail. yay, jayme!

hand spun goodness

lovely thick and thin yarn just as i've always hinted. i love that beautiful limey green! check out the colorful nuances of the wool.

thank you so much, jayme!

this makes me sentimental about all the good people i've met through this blog and knit groups, particularly the folk on the central coast. i miss their kindness, humor, and, most of all, their brand of camaraderie.

more importantly, thanks to everyone: commenters, lurkers, postcard senders, fellow bloggers. everyone. schmeebot would not be here today without you.

i did not knit in 1995 tuesday 09.14.2004

i met jg nine long years ago when i was going through an obsessive phase of drawing on generic tee shirts. i was making them for anybody who would wear them. i drew small and simple things like initials and fruits. i don't think i had the skills to draw anything more complicated.

i really don't remember much about the good old college years. if it weren't for the pictures i dug up two weeks ago, i would have forgotten about how i used to try to be creative.

anyway, i made one of those shirts for jg. his favorite color was orange.

full spread

close up

i bought the shirt and latex paint in small bottles from a hobby store. i used a toothpick to scribble the letters. the orange smear you see is jg's thumb print, except it didn't register very well. i forget how the orange it self was drawn. straight from the tip of the tube, probably.

i have no idea where that tee shirt is today. wish i had taken pictures of all the shirts i made.

here's another blast from the past:

jg, february 1996

that's the same guy i married. can you believe it? my momma had just given me her old canon ae1 program so i ran around taking everyone's portraits. if you want to see more, let me know. i know it aint knitting, but it's my second favorite thing to do: showing pictures!

some confessions wednesday 09.15.2004

did you know that there's another thuy who knits? a blogger, no less! get a double dose of thuy today!

here's a piece of knitting i was doing on and off. it's a present for g. i've decided to ruin the surprise and post it.

leftover (yarn) afghan

i'm using a whole box of odds and ends which keeps the stripes interesting. i got the stitch pattern from a scarf featured on a vogue cover a while back. it's over four feet wide and it's slowly getting longer. the pattern is a bit of a pain to keep track of. not to mention the tedious effort it requires to expand each and every one of the waves. before they were adjusted neatly, the entire afghan looked even messier. i chose it because i thought it would knit up fast. don't be fooled.

it's been on hold since july, when i started looking for a job. g said that she would still want it even if i didn't finish it. she'd use it for a bib.

i get no respect.

schmeebot loves ez thursday 09.16.2004

today's plug for a fellow blogger: a lovely messy haired knitter named holly. her photographs will knock you off your feet!

look what i got yesterday.

51 issues of wool gathering

yes, fifty one. there were four auctions on ebay and i succeeded in buying three. thanks to g, who nearly had a heart attack bidding on two for me while i was out of town. i had been following their availability closely for some time. i always thought they sold for too high. after i got to read through a few,* i became determined to acquire them.

* back at the beginning of august, carolyn of sb's in stitches lent me her every own collection. what an overwhelming act of kindness!

today i'm going to take it even easier and sit back and inhale the wool gatherings. i'm hoping to channel ez and dream up another seamless pattern.

have a great thursday, everyone!

shameless self promotion friday 09.17.2004

i'm making today schmeebot friday. another entry for the about page.

that's how old i am
golden gate bridge, 09 sept 04

last week i actually received a reader's complaint that there aren't enough pictures of the author. there you have it. and an uncalled for questionaire to boot.

it seems like every blog i see has some sort of secret pal involvement. i wish i was invited. sigh. oh well, i'll just pretend i'm involved. wanna play along? just answer these knitterly questions!

1. are you a yarn snob who prefers high end/natural fibers? do you avoid red heart and lion brand? or is it all the same to you?

all wool all the time. i have to disagree that natural fiber is synonymous with high end.

2. do you spin? crochet?

yes.

3. do you have any allergies?

yes. i am allergic to some cats and dogs. even though i am not allergic to cigarette smoke, i hate smokers.

4. how long have you been knitting?

almost three years, i think. off and on.

5. do you have an amazon or other online wish list?

yes. i'm fairly greedy.

6. what's your favorite scent?

there's a candle made by mole hollow with a scent called rain. it's sold at the garden gallery in morro bay. if you ever go there, get a whiff of one of those candles. you'll love it too!

7. do you have a sweet tooth?

not really. i hate having to brush my teeth after eating sweets.

8. what other crafts or do-it-yourself things do you like to do?

oh, i like making things involving paper, like envelopes, greeting cards, origami, etc. i like to take pictures and showing them off. it's not a craft though.

9. what kind of music do you like? can you play mp3s?

i like mellow music, lyrical to electro ambient. i am open to new stuff by anyone but sting and bjork. the mellower, the better. i can certainly play mp3s.

10. what's your favorite color? or do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer?

i like all colors, either really intense or really faded. for yarn, i prefer heather to solid.

11. what is your family situation? do you have any pets?

i don't understand the family situation bit. marital status, may be? i have no pets.

12. what are your life dreams?

living happily in big sur.

13. what is your favorite yarn to knit with?

wool.

14. what fibers do you absolutely *not* like? please note that schmeebot does not condone the usage of asterisks for emphasis.

acrylic. cotton is borderline.

15. what is your current knitting obsession?

beanies.

16. what is your favorite item to knit?

anything seamless.

17. what are you knitting right now?

i am knitting a sweater, an afghan, and a beanie. very slowly though.

18. what do you think about ponchos?

i like ponchos. i can't imagine wearing one but i like seeing them on people, particularly classy hand knit ones.

19. do you prefer straight or circular needles?

circular to knit, straight to decorate.

20. how did you learn to knit?

long story. basically self taught from videos.

21. how old is your oldest ufo?

no such thing. i rip them up before they can become ufos.

that was fun. let's all answer them!

the java station knit group strikes! sunday 09.26.2004

thank you

i can't believe i didn't discover this humble looking box of goodness sooner! i found it this morning among our packed up belongings that were stacked away because of the fumigation.

i got beyond excited when i saw java station on the mailing label! i nearly went mad because i couldn't find anything sharp to cut open the flaps. i tore into it with my bare hands right after i took that picture!

boy, do i feel grateful to the power girls of the java station knit group. you couldn't have timed it any better.

thank you.

andersen's knit club* wednesday 09.29.2004

i've been fondling the contents of the box for days now. i read the enclosed notes and cards over and over. i am thankful beyond words.

after a long debate with id+ego, i've decided to show you the box's contents in appreciation of the power girls of the knitting group formerly known as the java station. know that i appreciate the sentiments above all else.

here we go. ready?

from maura: moth repellent herbs+sock yarn
i think i'm missing the magic knitting book by maura.

from mary: tea+hand cream
tea comes in a real fabric mesh bag.
fragrant, warm, and yummy! i'm "getting infused" as we speak!

card from laura+emi
from jackie: hand milled soaps with
neat names like oregon rain and island kiss.

masterpiece by emi

from jayme: hand spun yarn, of course.
blue faced leicester black or schmeebot brown?
hm... jayme is onto me.

hand made card from erin

the following goodness didn't come with tags. they must be from the inseparable duo chauntel+tracy!

world class dishcloths with mysterious looking cast on edge

bath fizzer

heavy duty grade
took my grumps away by just looking at it!

i've been sleeping with this book under my pillow.

hahahahaha
hahahahahahahaha

thank you so much for having actually looked at my amazon wish list. i love that dvd! here's the inside joke: i used to borrow the vhs version of that video from the santa barbara library on a perennial basis. i would watch it nightly while eating a big bowl of ice cream. the white sands contrasting the blue skies, the soothing instructions, and the beautiful people are all very mesmerizing.

one evening, my then housemate fred came home during my little routine. he stood frozen in the hall way and stared at the tv screen for some five minutes before he turned to look at me sitting on the couch. then, with a confused frown, he asked, "shouldn't you be doing something, thuy?"

"yeah, i'm eating icecream."

the living room should be completely cleared by friday. then i'll walk me down the block and get me a thing of mint chocolate chip haagen dazs before i remove me the seal on that magnificient dvd!

* i hereby submit for membership consideration.
