this morning i decided to hit starbucks before going to work. i forget how crowded it gets on fridays. i was in a long line that wraps into a u shape.
while in line, i noticed that i was getting a lot of stares. for the women, i figured they must be admiring my well fit handknit sweater. the men, they must have found my skirt-legs-boots combo sexy. i felt like a star.
an hour later, i used the bathroom at the office. when i went to wash my hands, something in the mirror caught my eye. down feathers, two very fluffy ones. in the tangled bird's nest that i call my hair.*
the funny thing about this whole incident is: when people stare at me, i never assume it's because i look like a total slob with a terrible outfit and unkempt hair. i always think i must look really hot.
* i shower before i go to bed. i also go to bed fully dressed.
have a good weekend, everyone! remember to look in the mirror before going to starbucks.
that's me and my meaty calves on saddle rock. i went hiking on superbowl sunday, my second annual. last year i was by myself. this year, jg came along. here he is, making like a dead man on the rock. a very white half naked dead man, no less.
after the hike we watched the superbowl. we are not football fans; we only did it because of our indy connection. i was baking and knitting and jg was doing laundry and windexing the windows, but we pretty much saw the whole game. minus the half time show. prince looked so bad that i had to turn the tv off.
i now have a school girl crush on #26, kelvin hayden. i was hoping he'd get mvp for that awesome interception touchdown combo but he didn't! could someone please explain to me what peyton manning did that warrants the mvp award? he played terribly! if he knows what's good for him, he should go back to football camp and learn how to throw a ball. but first, he should hand the mvp trophy and the keys to the cadillac over to kelvin.
karen (waffles' owner) and i splurged on the tulips+daisies for bill yesterday. he was thoroughly delighted. bill is very finicky with sweets so it was nice to see that he enjoyed the bouquet. he shared it with the entire office. and we're still enjoying it today.
i took that picture in my front yard sunday morning. it had poured the saturday night so everything was good and drenched. i ran around the yard and took 204 pictures. half were of water droplets.

it had threatened to rain since saturday morning, all cloudy and dark. i figured i'd be stuck inside so i decided to bake. of course, as soon as i finished whipping up banana bread batter, the sun came out.
semi burnt
banana cranberry bread
the recipe is from a lutheran church publication from aitkin, minnesota. jg's grandma gave it to me. it's the best banana bread i've ever made. those lutherans can sure bake. anyway, the recipe calls for walnuts but i substituted dried cranberries (an impulse buy from trader joe's). excellent substitution, i might add.

sunday i went to east beach to eat my breakfast, the usual macdonald's hotcakes and coffee. i was hoping to see snow on the santa ynez after the rain but there wasn't any.
drift stump
i ran around on the beach with coffee in one hand and camera in the other. there wasn't much to take pictures of. i took 160 shots and half of them were of this one sandpiper.
proof that i was chasing the poor bird around
this next picture is of a front loader parked on the sand. curious to see a german sign on it.
"your snowboarding hopes are dashed verboten"
over all i had a fine weekend. i hope you did, too.
i had karen take that picture of me and waffles this morning. i look so tall next to waffs. the low perspective of the office building makes me look even taller. anyway, check out the shirt i'm wearing today.
bleeding heart
valentine or halloween? hard to tell. the shirt was given to me by my friend christian. he designed it for a skateboarding line a while back. he wore it while visiting santa barbara in 2005. i had to have it.

that picture is from an old photo essay i had put together about their tour of sb. i never quite finished it. i ought to wrap it up and show you.
have a happy saint valentine's day, everyone! let's have lots of heart shaped candies today.
these were taken the day before yesterday, when the sky was dotted with neat clouds. i drove over to the bluffs for a walk. i came back with 171 pictures. these are the only two i like.
jg and i walked down to clement street pretty early yesterday to check out the new year scene and to do some shopping. we walked by schubert's and, on a whim, decided to get cake. good that they didn't spell it birthday.
strawberry mousse, spring+lunar new year edition
and that's actually the cake i wanted to get but decided not to. i was afraid that it wouldn't hold up for the walk back to the apartment and later, the drive to san jose. may be next year, when we'll have to remember to bring a cooler.
jg at schubert's
before i got cake, jg and i had lunch and did some shopping. it was pretty crowded and we had our hands full so i wasn't able to take many pictures.

we spent the rest of the day celebrating the new year with my peeps in the south bay. there were lots of eating and drinking. in between rounds of food and drinks, there were red envelopes given left and right. kids and more kids and cheers and louder cheers. my family at its best: a mad house!

waffles has mastered the art of spoiling my pictures. she would either move into the direction where the camera is pointed or she would roll the ball so that it would be in the shot. she achieved both today.
. . .
i had to explain the lunar new year business to my webmaster this morning. the following is an excerpt of the conversation, word for word:
thuy: i was born in the year of the pig
rick: i think i was born in the year of the rat
rick: or crab
rick: i can't remember
thuy: crab HAAHAHAHAHAH
thuy: HAAHAHAHAHAHAH
rick: :))
thuy: HAAHAHAHAHAHAH
thuy: AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
thuy: HAAHAHHAAHAHHA
i was typing h and a so furiously that i got waffles all riled up. she nearly jumped on my desk to make sure i wasn't banging on the keyboard with a tennis ball.
on my way to work this morning i couldn't help but stop to take a few pictures of the cloudy sky. the ocean was the blackest i have seen in a long time.
looking east
now it's pouring. waffles is office-bound so she is just sitting here chewing on the ball. karen and i decided to put the rain to good use.
water for the dawg and plants
i wish it would continue to pour through the weekend. i like the rain.
