i took that picture of jg's sister and her husband on the side of the road in los olivos. they visited us for an extended weekend so we made like tourists and went for a wine tasting tour on saturday.

being the non drinker, i took a walking tour of los olivos, ending up at the local nursery browsing and taking pictures for almost an hour.

sunday we took advantage of the improved weather and went for a hike up romero canyon. when doug+amy were in town some ten years ago, we hiked the same loop except in thick fog. they were never convinced that there's ocean view until now.

this morning we went for a fancy breakfast at the boat house. i had to work for most of the day but we did manage to have dinner together before doug+amy headed out. the weather hadn't been ideal but we did our best to entertain. i hope the georgians enjoyed their stay.
jg and i went to henry coe state park for the first time this past saturday. it was his idea to check out new mountain biking trails. as usual, i came along for a hike.
"watch out for banana slugs!"
this was a completely spontaneous trip. neither of us did any research on the park. it's my least favorite way to explore a new place. but boy, am i glad for the experience!
gooseberry, i think
the muddy trail was lined with moss walls. it took me half an hour to cover the first ten yards. i was taking pictures of every square foot of the moss covered hill side.
a third of all the pictures i took are of mushrooms. i love their minute sizes and classic umbrella shapes.
another third of all the pictures are of the ferns and moss. i had no idea that the moss could be so shaggy in this part of california.
right in the middle of the trail
a five star trail
even the mushrooms have moss growing on them
trail at about a quarter mile in
low in the grass, about the size of a quarter
in the middle of the trail, partly crushed by trail users
moss tinged burrow
lacy lichen, long enough to be a scarf
maiden hair and shag carpeting
makes me think of the body snatchers

if you squint a bit you'd see this mushroom in the previous picture

catching up with jg back at the trail head
he didn't have a good ride, but he enjoyed the outing
may be he'll do a bit of research on the trail elevations before we go back to henry coe state park.
